Newcastle survived a Norwich fightback to book their place in the fourth round of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 win.
First-half goals from Jermaine Jenas and Shola Ameobi put a much-changed Magpies side firmly in the driving seat, but a 56th-minute penalty from former Newcastle striker Darren Huckerby dragged Nigel Worthington's side back into it and ensured a tense finish to a game which should have been over by the break.
The Canaries arrived on Tyneside having won only once all season, and that against Bristol Rovers in the previous round of the same competition.
For 55 minutes, they looked nowhere near improving on that as Patrick Kluivert and Shola Ameobi, prompted by Jenas, Darren Ambrose and James Milner, cut through them at will.
But Graeme Souness' side became increasingly careless as the visitors sensed a second famous comeback of the season at St James' Park, and it was Norwich who finished with the wind in their sails.
Newcastle managed to hang on in front of a crowd of 42,153 to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games, and although there were shortcomings, Souness will have been satisfied with much of what he saw.
