Deportvo Let Luque Go To Newcastle
It's amazing how Deportivo have suddenly changed their attitude after telling Freddy Shepherd he was out of order going behind the club's back to strike a deal with the player.
Sources in Spain last night insisted that a deal for Luque has been finalised after Shepherd upped his offer to £9m. The transfer has yet to be confirmed by the Magpies but, with Deportivo resigned to losing their talented attacker, it seems Souness has finally made a breakthrough following a frustrating summer.
Luque is scheduled to travel to Tyneside this morning for a medical and, with a five-year contract on the table, he could yet sign in time to face Manchester United at St James's Park on Sunday.
"I'm happy that a deal has been done," said the Spanish international. "The Premiership is an excellent league. It is up to the coach (Souness) but I am prepared to play against Manchester United on Sunday. To be in the team next to Alan Shearer would give me huge personal satisfaction."
