However, Northumbria Police they had the situation under control, and the number arrested was acceptable considering the reputation of the fixture.
Fans were sure to 'mix it', and the police did their best to keep both sets of supporters apart.
As always for the Tyne/Wear derby, there was a massive security operation but the police insist the fixture "passed without serious disorder," with a few troublemakers taken into custody, mainly for alcohol-related offences.
Four people were arrested in the ground and seven outside. Some of those were already known to police and were taken into custody to prevent problems escalating.
Chief superintendent Neil Mackay: "The vast majority of fans behaved well.
"Four arrests out of a crowd of 52,000 is still phenomenally low, and although there has been an increase in numbers compared to last November's derby, it can still be said that the match generated a great atmosphere.
"I would like to thank all the stewards involved for their assistance and would also like to commend the actions of police officers, who remained professional at all times."
