Santon rejoined Inter Milan on loan after three-and-a-half years at St James’s Park.
The defender’s fiancee, Chloe Sanderson, claimed he had been “pushed out” of the club on Twitter.
Asked about Sanderson’s tweets, which were later deleted, head coach Carver said: ”I think it’s a great move for him.
“It’s the club he’s come from, and maybe his girlfriend just finds it difficult because she’ll have to move over there.
“From a footballing point of view, it’s a great situation for him and for us. He wasn’t pushed out.
“I spoke to him. He asked about when he was going to get into the side, and I couldn’t really give him an answer to that.
“I’ve said from day one if you’re in the team, you stay in the team.
“It’s been a difficult situation for Davide.
“He’s had his knee problem – he hasn’t featured all season.
“The emergence of Haidara and Dummett has been massive for us. I think David saw that as a bit of an issue.
“I know he can play on the right, but Janmaat’s not done badly, either. He was getting to the stage where he’d played enough Under-21 games, and he now needed to play senior football to show he’s ready.”
