Let's face it ... when Scott Carson is off the boil ... he is a cartoon character.
The former Aston Villa and Liverpool man was more than partially to blame for England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 after conceding two howlers in their ill-fated 3-2 home defeat to Croatia.
He should have been banished to a small island off the Shetlands!
But Carson sees no reason why he cannot force himself back into the reckoning under Fabio Capello.
Carson (talking to the Mirror): "I'm only 23 and I've played 100 first-team games.
"I'm sure the England manager will look at who is playing well for their clubs before he puts them in.
"I'm just taking one step at a time and getting back in the squad was one of those steps.
"But now it would be great to get on the pitch as a West Brom player for England."
WEST BROM TEAM NEWS ...
West Brom winger Chris Brunt is pushing for a recall.
Brunt was dropped to the bench for Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Hull so that manager Tony Mowbray could accommodate an extra striker, but Mowbray could revert to a five-man midfield against Newcastle.
Central defender Abdoulaye Meite (calf) and midfielders Filipe Teixeira (calf) and Kim Do-Heon (knee) remain on the sidelines.
