Matt Ritchie’s 65th minute strike gave Newcastle all three points yesterday against Manchester United.
This was Mourinho’s 7th match at St James’ Park which he has failed to win and the game could have been very different if Alexis Sanchez hadn’t spurned his chance to make it 1-0 to Man United, less than 8 minutes before Ritchie scored.
Newcastle were phenomenal and United were poor but the stand out performer of the match was former Liverpool midfielder, Jonjo Shelvey.
Shelvey made more passes and tackles than any other Newcastle player and once again, played a vital role in a victory against Manchester United. (This was his fifth win in his last seven games against The Red Devils).
After the game, Alan Shearer and Phil Neville analysed Shelvey’s performance on Match of the Day.
Shearer explained that Shelvey needs to perform constantly in order to be selected for England whilst Neville agreed.
“Can he do it at Bournemouth? Can he do it the week after?"
Shelvey has struggled in parts this season and was sent off on the opening day for a ludicrous stamp on Dele Alli during Newcastle’s match against Tottenham.
The 25 year old has failed to register a single goal or assist this season in the Premier League despite playing 20 matches.
He has been sent off twice and only performed well sporadically.
Shearer : "Should he be going to the World Cup?
"In all honesty, every player has good games and Shelvey simply isn’t good enough for England even if he has the odd good game."
