The saga of Caldwell’s contract has been going on for sometime now, but after Sporting Lisbon decided against pursuing their interest in the player he opted to stay at Newcastle, despite being unhappy with the terms of the deal on offer.
But with the Scotland international looking like Jonathan Woodgate’s best partner at least the contract will give him the opportunity to earn himself a long-term deal.
Caig, who arrived on a short-term deal last season to provide cover for Shay Given and Steve Harper, signed his new contract despite last-minute interest from one of his former clubs Charlton Athletic.
