Toon manager Bobby Robson however has said that he will be fit for the weekend game against West Ham United, to ease any fears that he may be set for another long injury layoff.
Lomano Tresor Lua-Lua is also set to miss out with the exact same injury, though again should come back into contention for the weekend.
"Both Kieron and Lomano are pretty sore and we won't take risks with them," Robson said today.
"Kieron's groin strain is just something that has developed through twisting and turning.
"He just needs a couple of days rest and I'm sure he'll be fine for West Ham."
Jermaine Jenas is likely to start in place of Dyer, whilst Craig Bellamy is fighting to be fit to replace Lua-Lua, Carl Cort will be on standby.
