Steven Taylor was out of the side because of food poisoning and Edgar took his chance to make an impression.
Edgar: "It was like Man United all over again last season, because I came in not knowing if I would even make the bench or not.
"You have to prepare for every game as if you are going to play. I heard that Tayls had been ill all night and the gaffer told me I was playing. It was just a straight swap. He could have changed the team around so I didn't have to play, but the gaffer said he was confident in me.
"It's been a long time coming because I have been working hard. Under Adam Sadler I have learned a lot playing in the reserves, and Lee Clark before that. But training with the first team in the last few weeks has given me the chance to show the gaffer I have the ability.
"That was my main goal, and I was delighted he gave me a chance. My dad also watched the game back home.
"Some of the football we played was just unbelievable.
"The defence, midfield and attack all worked brilliantly. It was the first time I have been involved in a win at St James's Park.
"You can tell the fans are buzzing and the players are confident because of that too. I made a couple of mistakes in the first 10 or 15 minutes, but the lads got behind me and the gaffer told me to relax."
