The 27-year-old earned his second call-up to the Irish national team squad for the friendly against Serbia on March 5.
Rob Elliot: “I’m a bit embarrassed talking about it before I play but I want to be Ireland’s number 1 and a Premier League number 1.
“The dream is to play 50 times, 100 times for my country; that is my overall goal. I’m going to keep working hard to try so I catch the manager’s eye and get an opportunity.”
He has made just two apprarances this campaign due to the form of Holland international Tim Krul.
But despite a lack of opportunities, Elliot, who moved to St James’ Park from boyhood club Charlton in August 2011, is adamant he has improved as a keeper.
Rob Elliot: “I definitely feel I’m a lot better now than when I was at Charlton.
“That has nothing to do with Charlton but more to do with the top-level experience I’ve gained since the move.
“I maybe could’ve stayed there and worked my way up but when you’re offered the opportunity to come to a club in Europe and the Premier League then you have to take that opportunity when it comes.”
