The Newcastle United goalkeeper proved to be the hero during the Magpies’ 1-0 win over AFC Bournemouth this weekend. And after scraping through the last two Premier League matches with a thigh injury he was always looking vulnerable.
Elliot underwent treatment at the club’s Benton base in the aftermath of the victory on the south coast and ow Martin O’Neill has confirmed that Elliot will not be heading to eastern Europe for Ireland’s crunch play-off game.
He said today: “In essence, we will be travelling without him to Bosnia.”
Newcastle have had the added bonus of Karl Darlow returning to training and the ex-Nottingham Forest keeper is now in contention again.
United’s England youth international Fred Woodman has also been on standby and took a place on the bench against Stoke and Bournemouth.
But by the time the next Premier League game comes around, Newcastle could have three of their four goalkeepers available again. McClaren had said of the international break last week: “It could end up helping us.”
United have Tim Krul ruled out for the rest of the season.
