Former Inter Milan midfielder joined an elite band of derby heroes and also brought back memories of Liam O' Brien and Scott Sellars who have also scored winners in the same fixture from free-kicks.
Emre said: "I'm very happy to score my first goal for Newcastle and I'm very happy for the fans to score against Sunderland.

"Alan (Shearer) also wanted to take the kick, but I asked if I could because I felt I could score. I have worked on my free-kicks and corners for five years.

"When I am fit I want to do everything I can to help Newcastle. We have a good team and we need to keep picking up three points."
