First signing of new era completed
Newcastle United have completed their first signing of the January transfer window have secured the signature of England full-back Kieran Trippier.
Tripper makes the move back to the Premier League from Atletico Madrid where he enjoyed a successful two-and-half-year spell, including winning the La Liga title last season.
The 31-year-old is a natural right-back/right wing-back but is also able to play on the left side of defence. He features for England during the recent delayed Euro 2020 tournament where he helped his national team reach the final of the competition.
Trippier has played under Eddie Howe previously while at Burnley. His career took off while playing for the Turf Moor side before securing a move to Spurs in 2015. He has signed a 2-and-a-half-year deal at St James’ Park for a fee reported to be in the region of £12M.
This represents a promising start to the transfer window for the struggling Magpies. A player of Trippier’s quality and experience will undoubtedly improve the Newcastle back line and his ability going forward will also be a useful asset.
