But there will be big names leaving the club this summer, and Tim Krul’s future is in the balance given that he has a year left on his contract.
First-choice goalkeeper Krul, working his way back to fitness from the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament he suffered last October, was surprisingly not included in Benitez’s squad for this week’s training camp in Ireland.
However, Elliot, behind Krul in his rehabilitation from knee injury he suffered in March, did travel across the Irish Sea with his team-mates.
Long-serving Krul is interesting Everton – who are looking to replace Tim Howard – and he could yet leave in this summer’s transfer window if he proves his fitness in time.
Former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, now at Crystal Palace, is also understood to be considering a move for Krul.
Krul, one of the Premier League’s most consistent goalkeepers in recent years, posted a photograph on Twitter last week of him in training.
But Krul’s career could now take a different path.
Benitez also has two more goalkeepers – Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman – available to him.
And Krul’s future could now lie away from the club he has ably served since moving to England from his native Holland a decade ago.
