Rob Lee and Warren Barton, the king-pin of the Kevin Keegan era back in the 1990s, were arrested on Tuesday night following reports that a Mercedes E220 saloon had been taken and driven away.

Scotland Yard said the two men had been bailed to return to a police station on a date in September.

They were questioned at an east London police station after being arrested on suspicion of taking and driving a vehicle and driving while unfit.

Officers were called to Hackney Road, east London, at around 11.30pm to reports that a car had been stolen about an hour before, a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

The Mercedes was found in the same road, having been involved in a collision with a van.

The men were arrested later at two east London addresses.

Officers are also investigating reports that a satellite navigation system and a mobile phone were stolen from the vehicle, Scotland Yard said.

1995/2002 W.D.Barton 193/27 5

Born in Islington, one of the Wimbledon wild bunch.

Signed for £4m from Wimbledon and was the most expensive defender in the country at the time.

Went through a very difficult spell but won the fans over in the end.

Not the best defender ever to play for the Toon but his heart was in the right place and he had a genuine love of Newcastle. Remembered for giving Alessandro Pistone a pig's heart as a Christmas present, because he said the Italian showed "no heart for the club".

Transfered to Derby County for a nominal fee.

England international when he played in the abandoned game against the Irish Republic in Dublin. Never played again, although the Rothman's Yearbook insist he was capped as a Newcastle player. He wasn't.

1992/2002 R.M.Lee 368/12 56

Made 298 league appearances for Charlton before moving to Newcastle for £700,000, and was the last player to score at The Valley before it was rebuilt.

England international who has been a superb servant to Newcastle.

Was going to sign for Middlesbrough in 1992 but Kevin Keegan told him Newcastle was nearer to London. Something Keegan has since said "I was miss-quoted. I said it was easier to fly to London, meaning it was quicker getting to the airport".

Whatever WAS said, convinced Lee to sign for the Magpies and Keegan said later "Pound for pound, at £700,000, he was the best player I ever signed for Newcastle."

Signed for Derby County soon after Warren Barton but couldn't save them from relegation.
