Bob Moncur: "Michael wants to play in a winning team and be up there alongside the Manchester Uniteds and Liverpools of the world. That is quite right for a quality player."
"In a couple of years' time, it might be going so well for Michael Owen and Newcastle that he says `I am more than happy here'.
"If you are competing with the Man Uniteds or Arsenals, that is what he wants and what we all want. Hopefully that's where we will be as a club soon, in the top five again.
"I will be disappointed if Michael Owen leaves the club. I know he is back playing for England, and it is something I am not happy about as a Newcastle supporter.
"He will be happy because he is a player and wants to play football. The decision has been made and you just have to wish him all of the best.
"I will be disappointed in Michael, as a man, if he chose to leave us. I think he owes the fans and the club."
It's all a big change from two years ago when Owen signed for Newcastle and none of the major clubs wanted him. He waited two months for Liverpool to make a decision, and they gave him the elbow. And Owen admits he was close to signing for Wigan Athletic, just return to the Premiership.
If he DOES leave Newcastle using this ridiculous clause in his contract, I think his return to St James' Park in the colours of Manchester United or Arsenal will generate an interesting response from the Toon Army.
