Allen, 41, of Cranefield Drive, Watford, played for Wales, Newcastle, Norwich and Watford, and has been given a suspended jail sentence and a ban for drink-driving.
He admitted drinking up to 10 pints of beer when stopped by a Police Community Support Officer in Hertfordshire.
He was banned from driving for three years but opted to take a specialist court-appointed driver's course to cut the disqualification period to 27 months.
Allen must also attend at least six sessions of an alcohol treatment course.

Malcolm was bought from Millwall to deputise for Peter Beardsley who suffered a broken jaw in a pre-season friendly. Did very well, but was out of the side as soon as Pedro returned. Born in Deiniolen and was a Welsh international. Retired when he left Newcastle, he was involved in a few off the pitch activities such as being caught driving in Gateshead well over the limit.
