Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has told the Chronicle that Federico Fernandez has taken a knock to his hip, which could keep him out of Wednesday’s match.
Newcastle are due to take on Manchester United in two days’ time, and Fernandez was expected to start in the contest.
However, the centre-back could now be ruled out of the match, after being struck with an injury problem in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Watford at the weekend.
“He has a knock in his hip, so we have to assess him on Monday, and then see what happens," Benitez said.
"We have enough bodies, but always it is not good news to lose any player.”
Fernandez’s absence from Newcastle’s team may lead to Ciaran Clark coming in.
Clark has also been out with injury recently, but he is thought to be on the verge of returning.
Fernandez’s injury is a blow to Newcastle as he has been an excellent addition since joining.
The former Swansea City man has proven his quality at St. James’ Park already and is playing a crucial role for Benitez’s side.
Newcastle are currently in 15th place in the Premier League table, just three points above the drop zone.
