Newcastle have completed a deadline-day swoop to sign defender Federico Fernandez from Swansea for an undisclosed fee.
The 29-year-old was relegated with the Swans last season but is now back in the Premier League, signing a two-year deal at St James’ Park.
Fernandez becomes Newcastle’s seventh summer acquisition, with the Argentina international going straight into the squad for Saturday’s season-opener against Tottenham.
“It was a long day but I’m really happy to be here,” Fernandez said upon signing with Newcastle.
“It’s a new challenge in my life and I’m very excited to meet all the players and staff here.”
Magpies boss Rafael Benitez has experience of working alongside his latest signing and is pleased to add him to the ranks.
“I know Federico well from our time together at Napoli and it was an easy decision to bring him here. He is experienced, a very good professional and he will add competition in defence,” he said.
