Rafa Benitez has quipped that his players should feel like they are playing in a Champions League game when they run out to face Aston Villa at St James’ Park.
The club have worked hand in hand with supporters in an attempt to improve the atmosphere at St James’ Park.
A huge surfer banner will roll back the years for some supporters with memories of the early 1990s certain to come flooding back for those who remember the giant banners during the Kevin Keegan era.
Fans have also been urged to bring black and white scarves to the game against Villa as the Magpies look to close in on promotion.
The backdrop for the game will also be beamed out to a worldwide audience.
Benitez is right behind the supporters’ bid to crank up the atmosphere and told the Chronicle: “The atmosphere for a late evening kick off is always good anyway.
“I said for a joke to the players it could feel like a Champions League game because it’s at night and in front of a big crowd. We don’t need too many more things.
“We have 50,000 of our fans cheering and I think with the flags and other things the players are preparing, we’ll have a great atmosphere.
“Hopefully, we can do well on the pitch and keep the supporters happy.”
Newcastle slipped back down to second spot over the weekend after Brighton’s 2-0 win over Barnsley.
Yet Benitez has a message for the fans going into the last 15 games.
He said: “One thing I have said to the players, and now this is an opportunity to say it to our fans, we have to concentrate on OUR team. Even if things aren’t going really well in a couple of games for us we still have seven games in April.
“We know for sure that if we perform now it will be easier and it will be fantastic. That will keep us at the top of the table too.
“But if we have any problems in any games we still have to have confidence that this team is mentally strong enough to cope with the pressure and to do things well.
“I tell the players every day that it’s obvious that they can be consistent. This is a team you can trust.
“We can make mistakes but you can trust the team. It will be the key message until the end of the season.”
