Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has admitted that survival is still his side’s only ambition this season.
The Magpies suffered their first defeat in four matches with a 3-0 loss to West Ham at St. James’ Park on Saturday, and Benitez suggested that it served as a reminder that the Tyneside club must be realistic in their aims.
As quoted in the Chronicle, he said: “We were talking about that before. We were not thinking about Europe.
“We knew the target is to stay in the Premier League, and every point is important. It is exactly the same now as it was before.
Referring to the match itself, he said: “I’m disappointed with the defeat, but we had chances to score which would have changed the game.
“We made mistakes that gave them confidence and it made them more comfortable on the ball.”
Well we can forget about the FA Cup then!
