Sheffield Wednesday are hanging onto their Premiership lives by the slenderest of threads after crashing to their third successive Hillsborough defeat.

First Division football is staring manager Danny Wilson's side in the face as goals from Kevin Gallacher and Alan Shearer ensured the death knell is close to tolling for the Owls.

Not even the haunting memories of their humiliating 8-0 defeat at St James' Park in September could stir Wednesday into life as the FA Cup semi-finalists claimed only their third away win of the season.

Instead, Wednesday's old failings came to the fore, none more so than in the 11th minute as they gifted Newcastle a dream start.

In fact, it was 60 seconds of abject Hillsborough horror which simply summed up Wednesday's season - shocking defending at one end and a nightmare in front of goal at the other.

There appeared little danger when Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given booted a long goal-kick deep into the heart of the Owls' half.

But skipper Peter Atherton and Pavel Srnicek should equally share the blame for the foul-up which allowed Kevin Gallacher to steal in for the opener.

Atherton's headed back-pass was weak, Srnicek should have shown greater command of his area by coming for the ball, but a moment's hesitation allowed Gallacher to steal in.

For the architect of last week's FA Cup quarter-final win over Tranmere - he set up two of the goals in the 3-2 victory - it was only his second goal for the Magpies following his £900,000 move from Blackburn just before Christmas.

As Gallacher and his team-mates celebrated, the rest of the Owls players looked at Atherton and Srnicek with disgust, while the duo just pointed accusing fingers at one another.

If that was bad, then worse was to follow inside a minute as Gerald Sibon was guilty of one of the misses of the season.

Niclas Alexandersson weaved his way into the area, and it could be argued he should have finished his own jinking run, but he preferred to go for the safer option - or so it seemed.

Belgian striker Sibon was all alone and just five yards from goal when he received the Swedish international's pass, but his weak sidefoot effort lacked power and it enabled Given to push the ball onto the bar.

If the agony on the faces of the Wednesday players had been apparent when they conceded their goal, the look this time had First Division written all over it - not that Sibon's could be seen as his head was buried in his hands.

New Wednesday chairman Howard Culley must have been doing the same and wondering where the miracle is going to come from which will save his side from the drop.

Culley took over on Monday from Dave Richards, who stepped down in the anticipation he will now accept the £120,000-a-year position as independent chairman of the Premier League.

Richards, however, remains on the board as a director, with the moves described by fans this week as "the organ grinder having stepped down, but a monkey having taken his place".

Certainly, no one appears prepared to call an incisive tune at Hillsborough, with ideas in short supply on how to avoid the drop.

The Wednesday Independent Supporters' Association (WISA) distributed leaflets before the game under the headline 'Change, What Change?', and issued a petition calling for the board to resign en masse.

Even if change were implemented both at board and managerial level, it would almost certainly be too late to save the Owls from their seemingly inevitable fate.

Other than Sibon's howler, they failed to create any other notable worthwhile chance in the first half, although they had the lion's share of possession in comparison to United who played marginally the better football in an otherwise dismal opening 45 minutes.

After the break it was only Wednesday's urgency to salvage at least a point which saw them up the tempo and gain any advantage territorially, but in truth Given was never tested.

Newcastle always appeared capable of holding onto their one-goal lead because if Wednesday are devoid of inspiration off the field, then they are also lacking it on the pitch as well.

Wilson even brought off Gilles De Bilde in the 56th minute to a chorus of boos from the Kop and to the impassioned pleas of the Belgian international striker who held out his hands to the Owls boss as if to say 'why me?'.

But Richard Cresswell's arrival failed to institute the necessary desire needed for the final 34 minutes, with Danny Sonner and Alexandersson having half-chances in that period, but nothing more than that.

Newcastle, though, had the last word and Alan in particular, with the England skipper twisting the knife into now gaping wounds.

Rob Lee's 86th minute throughball was weighted to perfection as it sprung Wednesday's offside trap, and Shearer needs no second invitation for such chances as he raced onto the pass before slipping his 24th goal of the season past Srnicek.

At the final whistle, the Wednesday fans could not even be bothered to raise the usual chant of 'Wilson out' or 'sack the board'.

They know the end is nigh.
