McGhee had two spells at Newcastle (scoring 36 goals in 112 appearances) and they couldn't possibly have been so different.
He came from Morton for £150,000 1977 but never produced, then he went to Aberdeen and became a superstar.
Capped by Scotland, he won Scottish Championships and Scottish Cups with both Aberdeen and Celtic. As well as European Cup Winners Cup medal with Aberdeen.
Signed for Newcastle in 1989 for £200,000 and hit it off with Micky Quinn straight away.
Mark McGhee: "I was never actually given a set period of time to see if things would improve. I was just told to roll up my sleeves and get on with it.
"But in the period since the crisis talks, nothing has changed. We are still losing games and still at the bottom end of the league which is a worry.
"But unless something changes, I will continue doing the job and do what I can to improve the club's situation.
"Everything has come to a point where alarm bells have got to ring. They are certainly ringing strongly in my head and they have been for a while. But they really started going after watching how poor we were at Kilmarnock.
"This is the most critical point of the season. We are in a scrap and must dig ourselves out of a hole. But we will only do that by sticking together."
