Newcastle United fans have been given an open invitation to attend the funeral of former owner Freddy Shepherd.
Shepherd passed away at the age of 75 on September 25th peacefully in his home alongside family.
Fans have now been welcomed to help celebrate the former owners life and his time at Newcastle United by attending his funeral this weekend.
A statement on club’s official website read: “The funeral will be held at 12pm on Saturday 7th October at St. George’s Church, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne (NE2 2TF).
“Any supporters or members of the public wishing to attend the service should arrive no later than 11am, when any additional space will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
“Members of the public unable to enter the church will be able to listen to the service outside, where it will be broadcast via loudspeaker.
“Only family flowers are requested at the church but donations in memory of Freddy would be gratefully received at St. George’s Church for The Road to Recovery Trust.”
Shepherd played a huge role in the recent history of Newcastle United, having owned the club for over a decade before selling on to current owner Mike Ashley in 2007.
Amongst his greatest achievements at the club, was both helping guide the Magpies to three consecutive top five finishes between 2001 and 2004, as well as bringing Alan Shearer back to his boyhood club, who would of course go on to become the club’s greatest ever player.
