The Chronicle has learned that the former Lyon boss, who held brief talks with United in London back in January, has watched on with interest as the Magpies have dropped down the Premier League table.
Garde will become available for work again this summer and was on United’s radar before they became embroiled in a relegation battle.
Now though, United may have to strike another name off their list of potential candidates in Garde, with Steve McClaren another to make it clear he does not want the job at St James’ Park at this time while David Moyes also nailed his colours to the mast with Real Sociedad for next season.
A French source say Garde – who has not been in touch with Newcastle – would need to be convinced that United is the job for him next season.
It is also believed that the chances of St Etienne boss Christophe Galtier being a credible contender have also been dented with the Frenchman being eyed by Marseille.
