Last August the Newcastle boss shocked us all by saying "the League Cup and Europe are not my priorities", and Gibson says the man should get on the same wave-length as the supporters and aim to bring a cup to Tyneside.
John Gibson: "What is good about fan surveys is that they give us the opinion of those who matter, the loyal people who are the lifeblood of the game and turn up in their thousands upon thousands to support those representing them.
"Therefore when the Chron’s Toon poll this week demanded by a considerable margin that United win one of the domestic knockout cups come the new season, I hope Newcastle will listen to their paying customers.
"Because I have been banging on for more than two years now that United ought to bring home the FA Cup or League Cup to end the barren years of empty promises.
"The Mags cannot lift the Premier League title, even in our wildest dreams, therefore it is logical to target something attainable.
"It is not attainable, of course, when United put out the weak teams that lost at Brighton in the FA Cup and away to Manchester United’s reserves in the Capital One Cup. They predictably and deservedly bit the dust.
"Thus deprived, the Toon Army had to watch on helplessly as Wigan Athletic and Swansea triumphed on their special day at Wembley. Not the heavyweight clubs but those much less supported than the black-and-whites.
"What a lack of ambition and foresight on our behalf.
"Now, however, 68% of supporters have demanded a Wembley trophy with by far the largest number, 57.3%, preferring the more traditional FA Cup.
"Alan Pardew had better listen to that cry for help because he needs to win over United’s crowd once again. His popularity rating isn’t high by any means. As many as 43.7% want him sacked, while 28.5% say he deserves one final chance, the season that is coming up.
"Therefore, win something for your own sake, Pards!
"What was also clear in our poll is that the supporters blame Pardew more than owner Mike Ashley for last season’s shambolic fifth-bottom finish."
