"This was a massive victory, but not because of the opposition," said the Irish international.
"Closing the gap on Manchester United was the only thing on my mind as I pulled off those saves, and beating Sunderland just happens to make it even sweeter.
"We went into the game well aware that our main rivals had won on Saturday and we were determined to stay in touch.
"Now we've shown the rest of the league that we can come to a place like the Stadium of Light and it won't knock us off course.
"I like to think we've sent a message out to the rest of the top four and we deserve our place in the little group that's beginning to pull away."
