Two first-half goals from Gonzalo Bergessio condemned the Magpies to the loss, but Gouffran feels that he and his teammates are slowly working their way into the style of new manager Steve McClaren.
He told the club's official website: "It was a good game. We lost but I think we did well overall. Yes, we conceded two goals in the first 20 minutes but after that we were much better and we are working hard to be fit. This game will be good for us.
"Pre-season is all about finding fitness and doing the right things on the pitch.
"It is different but good. They want to play well and want us to show good things all the time. He wants us to pass the ball and that will suit the players we have. It is a very good idea."
Newcastle are next in action against Sacramento Republic on Sunday.
