Griffin Flies The Flag
Ex-Newcastle defender Andy Griffin believes there is not enough English talent in the Premiership. The Portsmouth player took an indirect shot at his own club by stating that heavy recruitment of foreign players is 'sad' for the English game.
Pompey boss Alain Perrin recruited nearly all-foreign talent into his squad for the new season, as he embarked on his first full campaign as Portsmouth boss.
The 26-year-old said: "It would be great if there were 11 British or even 11 English players out there but that doesn't happen - and it is quite sad for English football.
"To be deemed successful, you have got to recruit players from all corners of the world, but we have to be careful we are not ignoring the great young English talent out there.
"Clubs have got to open up other avenues and make sure you invest in academies to make sure we have English players coming though and playing in The Premiership."
