Michael Owen was injured in the campaign and Eriksson was not brave enough to put the pressure on the youngster ... even though it was the Swede's decision to include him in the squad.

But Walcott has that very target in mind, and says his ambitions are to succeed Michael Owen in the England team.

Walcott: "Hopefully I can take over from Michael in the future - you never know.

"I haven't thought about it a lot really but I'm feeling as strong now as I've ever felt and the fact that I'm playing more games is giving me confidence.

"I'm getting my touch back now after a period when I didn't really play for a long time.

"I feel absolutely fantastic at the moment but I am working on becoming more aggressive. I don't mean kicking players. I mean showing that aggression to run at players.

"I want them to see the back of my shirt. I have been doing a lot of work in the gym and I am using my shoulder, which was injured, to hold off players.

"I want to start more for Arsenal, keep my place in the team and then see what happens at England level.

"I'm still 18 and I need to keep learning my trade."
