A moment of madness from Guthrie, a player who was playing by the rules of the 1960s, long before he was even born!
But I take it he must have seen the odd video of the great McNamee ... and not only did the Scot scupper three Leeds players in one swoop ... but he leant over Bremner and pulled back his fist, just ready to finish him off!
But those were the days when we in the Leazes End used to encourage such treatment.
And I admit, I once shouted at McNamee when he had George Best pinned next to the corner flag ... "smash his legs, John".
But I out grew it, and seeing Guthrie's tackle(?) on the Hull player on Saturday shocked many of us.
Now the Toon midfielder will attempt to apologise to Craig Fagan in person after discovering he broke the Hull striker's leg.
Guthrie Took Lessons From McNamee?
Fagan suffered a fractured right tibia in the crunching challenge which earned Guthrie a straight red card in the dying moments of Hull's shock 2-1 win at St James' Park.
City's furious manager Phil Brown reacted to the news by instantly calling for the former Liverpool and Bolton player to be harshly dealt with.
Guthrie: "I was very upset to hear the news concerning Craig.
"The club have been in touch with Hull City on my behalf because I want to speak to Craig in person to apologise and wish him a speedy recovery. I hope to be able to do that as soon as possible.
"It was a challenge that came purely out of frustration towards the end of Saturday's game, but anybody who knows me will accept it was totally out of character on my part."
Brown: "It cannot be tolerated, it needs to be kicked out of the game.
"When you see that the end product is him putting a fellow pro in a cast, it's just not right.
"That's the horrible side of the game. I don't care what is going on at Newcastle, you cannot tolerate this.
"If I go back to the incident, my players were killing time in the corner, something that every Premier League club does, no matter who you are.
"In the process of doing that, someone has decided to take the matter into his own hands and lashed out at Craig Fagan."
