Guthrie will be free to leave on a Bosman at the end of the season, but the Sunday Sun can reveal his advisers are looking for better terms elsewhere.
Guthrie – who is represented by powerful agent Struan Marshall – told us last week he was in no rush to sign a deal with Newcastle.
We took that to suggest he was wanting better terms, but with Aston Villa and Wolves showing interest, he obviously has options.
Wolves are in turmoil, and I'm sure the Toon midfielder wouldn't consider another spell in the Championship, and who is to say the new manager (who will be appointed in the summer) is interested in him.
So the Wolves "interest" is more newspaper speculation.
But Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish is a fan of the former Liverpool player, and he could offer a better pay deal than Mike Ashley is currently offering.
In the past Guthrie has repeatedly insisted he would like to stay, but that is not the case recently, as he has spent much of the time on the bench.
