Taylor is only in the Newcastle team because Mike Williamson is injured, so why would he jump above England-born Williamson in the international reckoning?
England material? Newcastle material?
In fact Taylor’s inability to dislodge Iron Mike has left him pondering whether a New Year move might be the best option – considering Pardew has made it known he wants to bring in a central defender in the next transfer window.
The Magpies have won three Premier League games out of three since Taylor returned, but the London-born defender knows he has had two very poor seasons.
Will he be available in the New Year? I seriously think he will, but only if Mike Ashley makes funds available to bring in someone else.
We need to replace Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at the very least, unless Pardew sees Paul Dummett as central defence material.
Alan Pardew (talking to the Chronicle): “You can’t argue with his record (three wins since he came back in).
“He’s a player that, when he’s confident, can get in the England squad, which he did during my time here.
“The key to Steven is having a sustained run and staying injury-free, which he is having at the moment.
“When he gets his confidence he’s an outstanding centre-half.”
