Sam Allardyce said it was a difficult decision to drop Steve Harper because "the lad has done nothing wrong".
But Given's late mistake against Everton must give Harper added hope for a recall.
Harper Hopes Rise?
Shay Given was indeed a relieved man after the Magpies took all three points against Everton - after he helped a deflected Mikel Arteta cross into his own net.
Given said: "I was disappointed with that, but luckily for me it hasn't cost us any points.
"It was a bit unlucky for me. It took a wicked deflection of Alan Smith and I don't think it was even going in, but I was backpedaling and trying to help it on.
"On another day, if I hadn't have touched it, it may have hit the post and came out.
"But it then went on to the post, so it was unfortunate.
"It was a great win for us. It didn't look like it was going to be a five-goal game, but we were delighted to take the points.
"They didn't deserve the two goals. I hardly had a save to make all of the game, but sometimes as a keeper you get those type of games.
"The most important thing, however, is getting the three points, scoring three at home and everyone going home happy."
