A goal in each half helped Newcastle secure a 2-0 victory over 10-man Brighton in the Championship clash at St James’ Park.
Jamal Lascelles brilliantly headed the home side in front after 15 minutes in a scrappy first half before Shelvey’s first Newcastle goal on 63 minutes made sure of the three points.
The former Liverpool and Swansea midfielder took full advantage of an opportunity from 25 yards by bending a magnificent free-kick around the wall and into the net.
“This lad’s a genius, he just needs a bit of love,” Sky Sports pundit Holloway said in the aftermath of the clash live on the station. “Look at this free-kick, you don’t save those.
“Shelvey can do it all. He went to Liverpool at 17 and didn’t really get a go. He just needs a manager to believe in him.”
The Magpies’ third league win in a row sees them climb to fourth, while Brighton slip to ninth.
Rafael Benitez made seven changes to his side from their midweek EFL Cup win over Cheltenham, with injuries in attack forcing his hand, while Brighton handed a debut to Shane Duffy.
