The Gallowgate Flags group need another 40 or so volunteers as they get ready for their biggest display yet for the home game against Liverpool .
The group will unveil a new Rafa Benitez-themed flag that is being kept under wraps until kick off – as well as all of their retro shirt flags, four surfer flags and a new Northern Soul flag funded by t-shirt sales over the summer.
But they need manpower to make it work – and laudably 60 people have volunteered time on Sunday to help out with the display. The group will be working tonight on the plans but they’re looking for 100 volunteers and need people to put a few hours in on the day.
With Sky cameras on the game, a global audience and the visit of Benitez’s former club Liverpool, the group feel its perfectly poised to be the most colourful and vibrant display yet for a group that was set up to improve the St James’ Park matchday experience.
Here’s the three ways you can help on Sunday - and they’re eligible if you sit in the Gallowgate or not:
At 12pm on Sunday – come down to St James’ Park before it opens at midday and help us go through the final run through. To do this, meet at the Glass Atrium in the Milburn Stand (main entrance), opposite the players’ entrance.
At 3pm – Meet where there will be songs and flags at the North Terrace Pub – then walk with flags and songs to the ground through Leazes Park and then the city.
At 4pm – Any volunteers who are not able to make midday can meet at Access (gate) 11 in the Gallowgate Concourse, which is at the end of the Gallowgate Bar and next to the Chicago Town Pizza Stand. From there the group will give you a position, a flag or another duty to help out.
