He suffered a cruciate ligament injury in March, and although it was a risk taken by Chris Hughton (paying his wages for six months without any hope of a return in that period), the Toon boss says it was a risk worth taking.
The 20-year-old is back to light training, and slowly edging his way back to fitness.
Chris Hughton: "Danny's doing very well.
"The problem with the injury he has is that you have to follow the guidelines.
"He would have been told what he's allowed to do in particular times of his rehab.
"At this moment, he probably feels he could push on more, but that's how it gets you – when you're feeling good.
"After the injury he's had, we have to make sure he does the appropriate rehab work at the appropriate time.
"We're still looking at the new year. We're all looking forward to seeing him play – it'll be like a January signing."
