The Magpies lost all four games for which he was at the helm in the immediate aftermath of Kevin Keegan's exit in September, but this time they have recorded a victory at West Brom and the draw against Everton.
But Joe Kinnear picked the team and prepared the squad for West Brom, but took ill on the eve of the game, so giving Hughton credit is debatable.
Chris Hughton: "It seems that every game that comes up is as big as, if not bigger than, the last one. That's the way the league is at the moment.
"We are starting to get just a little bit of consistency in the group of lads we have got.
"We have been able to get some back from injury, which is very pleasing, we have got some not too far away and if we don't pick up too many injuries over the next few weeks, the squad probably will be as good as it has been at any stage this season.
"We have to gain confidence from that."
