The 28-year-old was an unused substitute for last Saturday's 2-2 draw at Barnsley, but played 55 minutes for the reserves in their behind-closed-doors friendly with Hibernian.
Andy Carroll is suspended at the weekend, so Ameobi looks to be going head-to-head with Marlon Harewood for a starting place.
Chris Hughton: "Shola's a big player for us and he's spent a lot of time out with a delicate injury.
"He's a local lad and well aware of the significance of games like this but we have a lot of competition as far as strikers are concerned.
"All of the lads in that department have done well. Marlon [Harewood] came off the bench and scored, so it was great for him, and we have got Nile [Ranger], who is a player learning his trade, and Peter's [Lovenkrands] experience too, so we have got the options."
