The Toon striker was axed by Hughton after off the field controversy last weekend when he was caught up in a fight in the Bigg Market.
Chris Hughton: “It was my decision to leave him out of the squad.
“We have a good squad and he was out of the 16.
“We’ve got good competition for places in most positions.
“I’m delighted for Shola.
“As a striker that’s what you want to be doing.
“Nile Ranger has got his first goal for the club and I’m really pleased for him.
“He went on and really played his part.
“Marlon Harewood came on and he played with such enthusiasm, but Shola is a finisher. If we keep him fit, that’s what he can do.”
