The Portugal international has started just ten Premiership games since his £8.5million move from Sporting Lisbon, but after scoring his first domestic goal in United’s colours he has set his sights on a more successful season next time out.
"It ended up better than expected and I think we even exceeded expectations," said Hugo about this season.
"In the beginning we aimed to finish in the top four of the championship, but we ended up guaranteeing third and that must be positive.
"My goal was important because it guaranteed three fundamental points to hold on to third.
"I expect to play more in the team though because I have the sensation that I can yield more," he continued.
"But I think I always did what was possible to fulfil the instructions of Bobby Robson.
"I feel like a more experienced player. I feel well physically and am going to take advantage of the vacation to rest and return in top condition."
