Steve Bruce signed Steve Harper from Newcastle United at the end of last season, and will be back for Taylor when the transfer window reopens.
The central defender has had a run of games since Fabricio Coloccini picked up a knee injury on New Year’s Day, but failed to show any of the form that had him tipped to be a future England regular.
Mike Williamson was retained for Sunday’s visit of Aston Villa, and Taylor has already said he will move on if he is not seen as a first team regular.
The sides meet in East Yorkshire at the weekend, but Coloccini will stay in the team, with Taylor is again likely to have to settle for a place on the bench.
Former Sunderland manager Bruce is an admirer of Taylor’s and Newcastle will be open to offers for one of their big earners.
Next month marks the ten-year anniversary of Taylor’s Newcastle debut, in a Uefa Cup tie in Mallorca.
Only Shola Ameobi has been at the club longer.
