Hunt, who scored 14 times in 51 appearances for United, had to retire from football in 2001 because of the effects of post-viral fatigue syndrome.
But, Alan Curbishley handed him the chance to prove that he had fully regained his fitness by offering him a trial with the Addicks’ reserve team, but after watching him three times has decided against offering him a deal.
“This has been a particularly difficult decision to make, not least because Andy has made such a vital contribution to the success we have achieved in recent years,” Curbishley told the club’s official website.
“After such a long absence from the professional game, Andy was always going to find it very difficult to achieve the level of fitness that is now required to play Premiership football and, for that reason, I have decided not to offer Andy a contract with the club.
“I wish him every success with whatever he decides to do in the future, and Andy knows that he will always be a welcome visitor to The Valley.”
