Rob Elliot is in pole position to start the season between the posts for Newcastle United.
The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper was rested as a precaution for the Magpies’ trip to Germany to face Mainz 05 yesterday.
But unless Rafa Benitez lands one of his goalkeeping targets in the next fortnight, Elliot is believed to be in line to play against Tottenham Hotspur on August 13.
United boss Benitez has gone public with his stance on Dutch international Tim Krul and it is understood that the long-serving stopper has been offered to a couple of clubs in Serie A.
Newcastle want to clear their wage bill and with Krul one of the top earners at the club, and currently training with the Under-23s, it makes sense for both the club and the player that he moves on soon.
Benitez has been linked with Udinese’s Greek goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis but no official bid has been placed on the table and while he has been mentioned behind the scenes as a possible back-up signing, Newcastle would need to sell Darlow for that move to happen.
As it stands, Freddie Woodman will also remain as number 3 for the Magpies unless a new keeper is signed before deadline day.
