In Carver’s only derby as United interim head coach, the Magpies succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the Stadium of Light in April, which he described as his “lowest point” at Newcastle.
McClaren’s England lost to Croatia at Wembley in 2007 and that prevented them from qualifying for Euro 2008 the following year, something the ex-Three Lions boss has admitted brought him “dark days”.
Carver believes that if McClaren is in charge for what would be a record sixth-straight loss for United against Sunderland then the pain would be just as excruciating.
Speaking to The Star, Carver said: “This is a game Steve dare not lose.
“That night in 2007 when England lost against Croatia at Wembley to miss out on the Euros was the lowest point for him.
“Well, being manager of Newcastle when Sunderland beat you is just as bad – and I should know.”
While some of his predecessors, including Carver, attempted to big up the occasion of a Wear-Tyne derby, McClaren has insisted he is treating the preparation “just like any other game”.
But Carver believes if United lose, McClaren will soon find out it is “certainly not just another defeat”.
“Put it this way, when you lose, it’s certainly not just another defeat,” he added.
“I always tried to remain upbeat when I was in charge but I struggled in the days after Sunderland beat us.
“Maybe it was the fan in me but I can’t really put into words how bad I felt afterwards.
“You just want to lock yourself away because as manager you feel responsible.
“I’m praying Steve doesn’t have to go through what I did.”
