Last summer Newcastle United paid £6 million to sign Blackburn Rovers captain Grant Hanley, but the move has not worked out.
Hanley, 25, has started only two Championship games and made a further five appearances from the bench.
With the Toon likely to earn promotion, Hanley's chances of regular football in the Premier League will be even slimmer, and he should be a prime target for Championship clubs looking to strengthen.
Here are three sides who should consider a move for Hanley in the summer...
Nottingham Forest
Despite keeping a clean sheet against Brighton at the weekend in a surprise win, Nottingham Forest have one of the worst defensive records in the Championship.
They have conceded 58 goals from 35 games, the second highest in the division.
With centre-back Michael Mancienne's contract set to expire, Forest need reinforcements, and Grant Hanley would be a major improvement on their current options.
Derby County
Derby could offer Hanley a crack at promotion next season, his initial aim when he signed for Newcastle.
35-year-old Chris Baird started at centre-back for the Rams at the weekend in the 2-1 win over Barnsley, a sign they need reinforcements.
The Derby Telegraph reported last summer that Hanley was linked with a move
Fulham
Fulham are long term admirers of Hanley and were beaten to his signature by Newcastle last summer.
Slavisa Jokanovic remains in charge of the club and it is very possible they revisit their interest this time around.
They are in seventh place currently and outsiders to win promotion, and if they do not then it would make sense to take a look at Hanley as they re-tool for 2016/17.
