Is Mick Quinn Right Or Wrong?

Trust me, apart from Rolando Aarons ... there isn't a Gazza, Waddle, Beardsley or Shearer there.

And it's a long, long time since we had any quality coming through the ranks.

Mick Quinn: "I don't know about you, but I just can’t get excited about Newcastle United.

"Where is the club going? What’s the strategy, the structure? The grand plan?

"Listen, we won’t go down. So between now and the end of the season, are we just going to let things peter out until we finish 10th?

"Doesn’t exactly stir the blood, does it?

"I just want us to finish the season on a high. The fans deserve better, they get short-changed up there.

"So I’d love someone from the club to come out and explain the strategy – any strategy! – for the next few years.

"All we ever hear with regard to Mike Ashley these days is stuff about Rangers, and even when Lee Charnley does speak, let’s be honest, he didn’t really tell us anything we didn’t already know.

"I know the club have started to give youth its head again, but the last time they did that – and did it properly – I was captain!

"Ossie Ardiles gave the likes of Steve Howey, Steve Watson (remember his somersault throw-ins? What a breath of fresh air!), Lee Clark and Robbie Elliott a chance, and as skipper I took them to the Bigg Market and made men of them.

"It didn’t do them any harm, and they didn’t turn out too shabby either.

"Kevin Keegan turned them into some side and just fell short of success, so it just shows what’s possible.

"For me, that’s the way we’ve got to go. At the moment, we’re drifting. Going nowhere.

"In my day, if you had nothing to play for towards the end of the season, you gave the kids a run out.

"That’s not as easy these days, with so much money on offer depending how high you finish in the table."
