Yohan Cabaye's first goal for Newcastle gave the fourth-placed side a 1-0 win over Wigan at St James' Park.

Hugo Rodallega could have put the Latics ahead in the first half but failed to take advantage when put clear.

Alan Pardew's men almost went ahead after 50 minutes when Demba Ba met Ryan Taylor's left-wing cross with a flashing header which Ali Al Habsi gathered well.

Newcastle opened the scoring with 10 minutes to go when Cabaye produced a neat finish, leaving Al Habsi with no chance.

Grant Holt's 60th-minute header earned Norwich a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

Craig Bellamy, making his first Premier League start since his return to Liverpool, had seemingly put the hosts on course for victory when he opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time.

But Liverpool were made to pay for a string of missed chances - three times they hit the woodwork - when Holt climbed highest to head home Anthony Pilkington's cross.

Liverpool couldn't find a winner despite two glorious injury-time chances as first Andy Carroll put a free header wide from six yards before Luis Suarez saw his close-range effort brilliantly tipped over the bar by John Ruddy.

Two goals in the last eight minutes saw Sunderland claim a vital 2-0 victory at Bolton as they picked up just their second league win of the campaign.

Stephane Sessegnon produced a crisp finish eight minutes from time before Nicklas Bendtner sealed the points in stoppage time at the Reebok Stadium.

Bolton had more of the game but it was the Black Cats who went ahead with less than 10 minutes to go after the hosts failed to clear the ball in the area.

Chris Eagles lost his footing, allowing Sessegnon to turn smartly and slot the ball home.

Sessegnon then turned provider, running at the Trotters' defence and then slotting a ball through for an unmarked Bendtner who calmly converted.

A contentious midlands derby between Aston Villa and West Brom ended 2-1 to the Baggies.

Darren Bent missed a golden chance to put Villa ahead early on when he found himself unmarked eight yards from goal and shot over.

However, he kept his nerve later on to convert the spot-kick awarded when Ben Foster felled Gabriel Agbonlahor midway through the half after he pounced on indecision between the keeper and Steven Reid.

Bent stepped up and put the penalty into the bottom-left corner.

Albion squandered a golden opportunity to level in the 36th minute when they were gifted a penalty.

It appeared to have been awarded after a clash between Chris Herd and Jonas Olsson which saw the linesman flag, but it seemed very harsh.

Brunt blazed the ball well wide from the spot, but made amends by providing the corner from which Olsson headed home a minute before the break.

The Baggies then went ahead 12 minutes after half-time when Paul Scharner showed great agility to hook home a left-footed shot from Brunt's outswinging corner.

In the early game, Wolves ended their five-match losing run as late goals from Kevin Doyle and Jamie O'Hara saw them salvage a 2-2 draw against Swansea at Molineux and alleviate some of the pressure on manager Mick McCarthy.

The Welsh side were in complete control at half-time courtesy of goals from Danny Graham and Joe Allen and looked set to record a first away win.

McCarthy's side were booed from the field at the interval and there was considerable disapproval from the home fans when he removed wingers Adam Hammill and Matt Jarvis for Nenad Milijas and Adlene Guedioura.

But Doyle tapped in after Michel Vorm could not hold a Sam Vokes effort, before O'Hara calmly slotted the leveller after intelligent play on the left by Doyle to earn a point.

SUNDAY

MU

Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko both scored twice as Manchester City made a huge title statement against their fierce rivals Manchester United with a crushing 6-1 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Balotelli, who had found himself subject of more headlines after a fire at his home, put City into the lead after 22 minutes with a clinical low shot from the edge of the area.

The controversial Italian marked the goal by lifting his shirt to reveal a T-shirt saying "Why Always Me?".

United's problems increased considerably as Jonny Evans was sent off within two minutes of the restart for denying Balotelli a goalscoring opportunity by pulling back his arm when clean through.

Although the resulting free-kick on the edge of the box came to nothing, City doubled their lead on the hour when David Silva caught the home defence with a brilliant ball for James Milner inside the area and Baloteli arrived unmarked to turn in the cross from close range.

The visitors were in complete control and claimed a third after 69 minutes as Milner played Richards into space on the right and he duly squared for Aguero to slide home from six yards.

Darren Fletcher pulled one back in the 81st minute before City unleashed a sensational blitz of three goals in the closing stages, Dzeko getting two of them and Silva the other.

Roberto Mancini's men are now five points clear of United at the top of the Barclays Premier League.

Chelsea missed the chance to go second as two sending offs, seven yellow cards and a penalty handed QPR a 1-0 victory over Loftus Road.

Jose Bosingwa and Didier Drogba both saw red in the Barclays Premier League clash at Loftus Road, while Ashley Cole also picked up a suspension for his fifth booking of the season.

The rot set in when David Luiz needlessly conceded an eighth-minute penalty which Heidar Helguson scored, but the nine men wasted more than one chance to level, most notably when Nicolas Anelka headed straight at Paddy Kenny.

Elsewhere, Rafael van der Vaart's double earned a 2-1 victory for Tottenham at struggling Blackburn to increase the pressure on Rovers boss Steve Kean.

Another protest was staged outside Ewood Park by disgruntled Blackburn fans prior to kick-off and the heat was turned up further on Kean when Van der Vaart put Spurs in front inside the opening quarter of an hour.

The hosts equalised through Mauro Formica's fierce strike in the 28th minute, but Van der Vaart produced a brilliant winner eight minutes after the restart.

Robin van Persie scored twice after coming on as a substitute as Arsenal finally saw off Stoke 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners had been pegged back by Peter Crouch's goal, which cancelled out an opener from Gervinho.

But Van Persie, rested from the starting line-up by manager Arsene Wenger, bailed his team-mates out with his eighth and ninth goals of the season in the second half.

Last-gasp efforts from Louis Saha and Jack Rodwell earned Everton a 3-1 victory at Fulham.

Royston Drenthe's splendid early strike gave the Toffees a third-minute lead but Bryan Ruiz's exquisite chip looked to earn a share of the spoils.

However, late efforts from Saha and Rodwell secured a shock victory in west London.
