Italian Serie A giants Napoli are plotting an £18million bid for Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, according to The Mirror. The Serbian international is a fans’ favourite at St James’ Park, and has recently enjoyed a run in the side, scoring twice in both matches against Preston North End in the EFL Cup and then the Championship later in the same week.
It has been a below-par start to the league season from Maurizio Sarri’s side, who are already well off the pace compared to league leaders Juventus. An injury to big money striker signing Arkadiusz Milik has left them short in the forward department, and Sarri believes that 22-year-old Mitrovic could help fill that void.
Mitrovic made the move to St James’ Park at the start of last season from Beligan Pro League side Anderlect for a fee in the region of £13million. The Geordie faithful will be desperate for the player to remain at the club, and the man himself recently stated he is more than happy with life with the Magpies. Nevertheless, an £18million bid would certainly give the club a decision to make, and it isn’t every day that a major European club make such an enquiry.
Rafa Benitez is looking to guide Newcastle back into the Premier League at the first attempt and sit top of the table after 16 matches, enjoying a comfortable eight-point lead inside the automatic promotion spots. They are likely to add more new faces in January, but would they be prepared to let Mitrovic depart?
