However, Lille kept putting up the asking price, and Debuchy ended up staying with the Ligue 1 side.
Their sale of Eden Hazard cancelled out any ideas of financial pressures and they wanted to kee their other stars.
Debuchy: "Yes, I was disappointed the Newcastle move failed ... I hope there will be other opportunities.
"I am now 200% committed to Lille and concentrating on this season, but hopefull the possibility to leave may come up again.
"I will be 28 in July and I want to make a move to the Premier League while I can."
Newcastle United will be keeping an eye on the situation and will be planning a move soon.
